With the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Sura 17 (Bani-Isra’il)
Verse 23-24: Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honour. And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say: “My Lord! bestow on them thy Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood.”
This verse places duty to parents second to duty to Allah (SWT). We are told not even say “Uff” to them. In common usage this would be saying “Agh” in a negative manner. Thus respect and regard for parents is set not only as a high priority but a high standard as well. Disrespecting them is no light matter in the sight of Allah (SWT). We are taught to be loving and supporting of them in old age like a bird who protects its young under wings. We are also given a beautiful dua to read for them in the verse asking Allah to bestow upon them His mercy.
