Surah 23 (The Believers)
You Only Live Once on this earth
Verse 99-100
(In Falsehood will they be) Until, when death comes to one of them, he says: “O my Lord! send me back (to life),-“In order that I may work righteousness in the things I neglected.” – “By no means! It is but a word he says.”- Before them is a Partition till the Day they are raised up.
Verse 100 tells us that there is a barrier (barzakh) preventing a soul from returning back to life. This Barzakh can be understood as a state from the period of death up to resurrection on the Day of Judgement. In this state some, like Pharoah and his tribe will be shown the fire of hell daily (40:46). Others like the martyrs will be receiving their sustenance with Allah (3:169), while others may be in a state of slumber (36:52).
