Surah Furqan (25) 20/12/2015

With the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Sura 25 (Al-Furqan)

Selfish desire

Verses 43-44: “Seest thou such a one as taketh for his god his own passion (or impulse)? Couldst thou be a disposer of affairs for him? Or thinkest thou that most of them listen or understand? They are only like cattle;- nay, they are worse astray in Path.”

This verse widens our understanding of the Kalimah. We are not to take another “ilah” (god) but Allah. However, in this verse we learn that even our passions or desires (hawa) can become an “ilah” and could obstruct our duties or submission to Allah (SWT). This is a subtle but serious concern and we need to be on our guard. Shaytaan has promised to create in us “false desires” (Sura 4 Verse 119) and is a constant challenge.
