Surah Saba (34) 20/03/2016

With the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Sura 34 (Saba – Sheeba)

Verse 10

034.010 We bestowed Grace aforetime on David from ourselves: “O ye Mountains! Sing ye back the Praises of Allah with him! and ye birds (also)! And We made the iron soft for him;-

Is music and art permissible in Islam? Here Allah tells us that Nabi Dawood sang the praises of Allah and the mountains echoed his praise. Looking at nature and the nature of man, there are wonderful sounds in our environment. The aesthetical aspects of humankind allow them to love beauty and including beautiful sounds. The emotional side yearns for calm and tranquillity. Music can fulfil these needs of man.

Everything in nature can be used either for evil or for good, so too is the case of music and art. The only condition being that music and art should not be associated with anything that goes against the Laws of Allah. Things such as Shirk, immorality, etc.

Regarding the permissibility of images, Allah tells us that Nabi Sulaimaan built images (statues) as part of the aesthetics  of his kingdom as these images had no association with  shirk.

Cross reference:

034.013 They worked for him as he desired, (making) arches, images, basins as large as reservoirs, and (cooking) cauldrons fixed (in their places): “Work ye, sons of David, with thanks! but few of My servants are grateful!”
