With the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Sura 40 (Mumin)
Study of ancient civilisations
Verses 21-22 “Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the end of those before them? They were even superior to them in strength, and in the traces (they have left) in the land: but Allah did call them to account for their sins, and none had they to defend them against Allah. That was because there came to them their messengers with Clear (Signs), but they rejected them: So Allah called them to account: for He is Full of Strength, Strict in Punishment.”
In the above set of verses we are encouraged to study ancient civilizations who were deemed the superpowers of their times such as the Ad, Thamud and Pharoah who thrived in times gone by. To obtain a glimpse of their power the Quran directs us to observe their “traces in the land”, which today feature amongst the wonders of the world, namely the Pyramids of Egypt, the palaces of Petra etc (see pictures below). Unfortunately they became blinded by their enormous power, strength and scientific advancement and were destroyed after refusing to reform their conduct in accordance with Allah’s message.
This message is a warning to us not to be blinded by power whether individually or collectively and to always do our best to adhere to Allah’s commandments.
