Sura Fath (48) 04/08/2016

With the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Surah 48 (Fath)

Bayah – the pledge of allegiance

Verse 18: Allah’s Good Pleasure was on the Believers when they swore Fealty to thee under the Tree: He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down Tranquillity to them; and He rewarded them with a speedy Victory;

The verse describes the Bayah made by the believers as a show of commitment to Allah and His Rasool at the challenging time surrounding the treaty of Hudaibiyah. This show of commitment led to the “speedy” or “near” victory which was the conquest of Mecca two years later. Bayah is sometimes misconstrued and is in essence a show of commitment to the cause of Allah (SWT) and none else.

This is clarified at the end of verse 111 in sura 9 described as bargain of a “deal” (bayah): “Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and the Qur’an: and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme”
