Sura Hadid (57) 03/10/2016

With the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Surah 57 (Hadid)

Life is but a distraction

Verse 20: Know ye (all), that the life of this world is but play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting and multiplying, (in rivalry) among yourselves, riches and children. Here is a similitude: How rain and the growth which it brings forth, delight (the hearts of) the tillers; soon it withers; thou wilt see it grow yellow; then it becomes dry and crumbles away. But in the Hereafter is a Penalty severe (for the devotees of wrong). And Forgiveness from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure (for the devotees of Allah). And what is the life of this world, but goods and chattels of deception?

This verse beautifully illustrates the cycle of life. The example of the seed grain which is buried under the ground grows into something so awesome – imagine a drive through the fields – yet in time it dies and the delight was but short lived. In the same manner we have beginnings (birth of a child, a new business) etc and over time it brings great joy but with the passing of time age takes over and all that comes to an end. Although all these are important but when it becomes the “be all” it is also the “end all”. Allah SWT reminds us that these things can overtake us and distract us – we fall for the fun and games, we delight in the temporal. Life is a journey not an end.

Continues tomorrow…Insha Allah
