Surah 57 (Hadid)

Justice – an integral part of Islam

Verse 25: We sent aforetime our messengers with Clear Signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance (of Right and Wrong), that men may stand forth in justice; and We sent down Iron, in which is (material for) mighty war, as well as many benefits for mankind, that Allah may test who it is that will help, Unseen, Him and His messengers: For Allah is Full of Strength, Exalted in Might (and able to enforce His Will).

Three integrated elements are mentioned here. The Quran, Mizaan (Balance) and Iron which when combined achieve one of the primary purposes of the revelation, I.e. The establishment of Justice. Unfortunately, today this is a neglected principle amongst many Muslims and our focus has become limited to rituals. The Quran however provides guidance and a moral code, scales of justice defining right from wrong and the legislative process. These alone cannot achieve justice without an enforcement unit (using iron) and this combination is the prescription of Allah (SWT). The mention of iron (Hadid – title of the Sura) – is a blessing from Allah and used for weaponry but has wide benefits and life without it is difficult to imagine (cars, foundations for buildings, cell phones, watches etc.) This is the test… who amongst us will rise to the responsibility of establishing justice and maximizing the use of science and technology to improve the safety and quality of life for humanity… an Islamic duty.

Continues tomorrow…Insha Allah
