Surah Hijr (15) 25/08/2015

bismi_65

With the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Verses 98-99: “But celebrate the praises of your Lord, and be of those who prostrate themselves in adoration. And serve your Lord until there comes unto you the Hour that is certain.”

The sura ends with these beautiful words to comfort the Prophet (SAW) who faced opposition with the Quranic message. He was advised to take comfort serving Allah (SWT) – the one worthy of obedience and that the final hour will be a day of Truth.   Believers learn from this that in view of opposition to Allah’s message we should take comfort in serving Him and being in awe of Him.   This will guarantee us success against those who oppose Allah’s message.

This concludes Sura Hijr, tomorrow we commence with Sura Nahl (the Bee),  inshallah.

Verse 66: And We made known this decree to him, that the last remnants of those (sinners) should be cut off by the morning.

Good news is granted to Ibrahim (AS) and his wife in old age of a son to be born – Ismail (AS). This followed by news in verse 66 above of the destruction of the people of Lut (AS) and the communities of Soddom and Gomorah. The people of Lut (AS) were guilty of multiple sins, one of which was that of homosexuality (see also 7:80-81 & 26:165-66)

Sura 15 Verses 47-8: And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury: (they will be) brothers (joyfully) facing each other on thrones (of dignity).

These verses describe the state of felicity for those who enter Jannah. In life we face pain, both physical and emotional – injury and sorrow – however, the state in Jannah will clear all those negative states and replaces it with happiness and satisfaction.

Iblees’ refusal to heed Allah’s command

Verse 33: (Iblis) said: “I am not one to prostrate myself to man, whom Thou didst create from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape.”

The story of Adam (AS)’s creation is given in this sura. What we learn in verse 33 is the rebellion of Iblis which is based on sheer arrogance. He refused Allah (SWT)’s command and thought he was superior to Adam AS. Hence the first sin was arrogance against Allah (SWT)’s instruction, a characteristic that is incompatible with Jannah.  Allah save us from arrogance and refusal to heed His commands.  See also Sura 7 Verse 40.

Verse 22: And We send the fecundating winds, then cause the rain to descend from the sky, therewith providing you with water (in abundance), though ye are not the guardians of its stores.

In verse 19, a few verses earlier the balance created on earth is highlighted or what is now referred to as the ecosystem. In the above verse “fecundating winds” or as another translation puts it “winds as pollinators that fertilize plants” is highlighted. Thus the Quran encourages scientific learning with a view to benefit others and also in achieving a greater awe of our Creator the source of all these blessings.

Sura Hijr (15)

Verse 9: We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).

The Quran is the only revealed book guaranteed protection. Recent reports from Birmingham have provided further external evidence. The internal evidence is the miraculous scientific statements that could only have been authored by Allah (SWT) – the All-Knowing. This protection of the Quran means that it is the quality standard by which other sources need to be validated. See also: Sura 5 Verse 48

 Sura Hijr (15)

Verse 3: Leave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them).

This verse refers to the unbelievers but has lessons for us as well. Are we satisfied with the comforts and joys of this world and have no awareness of the next world ? In what do we place our hope and aspirations? See also Sura 18 Verse 46
