Surah Al Kahf (18) 14/10/2015

With the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Sura 18 (Al Kahf)

18:109 Say: “If the ocean were ink (wherewith to write out) the words of my Lord, sooner would the ocean be exhausted than would the words of my Lord, even if we added another ocean like it, for its aid.”

Cross reference
31:27 And if all the trees on earth were pens and the ocean (were ink), with seven oceans behind it to add to its (supply), yet would not the words of Allah be exhausted (in the writing): for Allah is Exalted in Power, full of Wisdom.

6:38 …..Nothing have we omitted from the Book, and they (all) shall be gathered to their Lord in the end.

The Quran is timeless and complete. The guidance contained in the Quran will never become obsolete or irrelevant,  it remains Allah’s timeless miracle.  In terms of its function as a guide to humanity,  it is totally complete.  It’s laws,  stories, etc all contain meanings that will withstand the test of time until the final hour.  With such power vested in the Qur’an we owe it to ourselves to earnestly study it.

Sura 18 (Al Kahf)

18:103 Say: “Shall we tell you of those who lose most in respect of their deeds?-

18:104 “Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life, while they thought that they were acquiring good by their works?”

18:105 They are those who deny the Signs of their Lord and the fact of their having to meet Him (in the Hereafter): vain will be their works, nor shall We, on the Day of Judgment, give them any weight.

Cross references
14:18 The parable of those who reject their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a tempestuous day: No power have they over aught that they have earned: that is the straying far, far (from the goal).

We find that throughout the Quran Allah SWT warns us against being among those who reject His message or among those who conceal the truth (kufr).  With kufr comes a denial in the accountability on judgement day and causes us to lead lives without moral constraints.   For such people their efforts will bear no weight in the sight of Allah in the Hereafter.

Sura 18 (AL Kahf)

With power comes responsibility

18:83 “They ask thee concerning Zul-qarnain. Say, “I will rehearse to you something of his story.”
18:84 Verily We established his power on earth, and We gave him the ways and the means to all ends.”

Zul Qarnain was vested with great power by Allah SWT.  He used his power and skill to protect people from the tyranny and oppression of tyrannical superpowers (the Gog and Magog). His leadership highlights the harmony and balance between power , humility and compassion. His focus was to protect and uplift his people and not to seek self glorification …18:95 He said: “(The power) in which my Lord has established me is better (than tribute):..
Muslims should strive to become like Zul Qarnain,  to develop our power and skill and to use it to establish justice and peace.

Sura 18 (Al Kahf)

The Law of Respite is a blessing from Allah SWT

18:58 But your Lord is Most forgiving, full of Mercy. If He were to call them (at once) to account for what they have earned, then surely He would have hastened their punishment: but they have their appointed time, beyond which they will find no refuge.

Cross references
35:45 If Allah were to punish men according to what they deserve. He would not leave on the back of the (earth) a single living creature: but He gives them respite for a stated Term: when their Term expires, verily Allah has in His sight all His servants.

The law of respite gives us an opportunity to reflect and amend our conduct before the punishment descends upon us.  We have the final revelation to guide us towards the straight path and by following it we avert the punishment and attract Allah’s mercy.   It’s now up to us to make the endeavor to follow that guidance (Al Quran) 5:16 Wherewith Allah guideth all who seek His good pleasure …..

Sura 18 (Al Kahf)

18:56 We only send the messengers to give Glad Tidings and to give warnings: But the unbelievers dispute with vain argument, in order therewith to weaken the truth, and they treat My Signs as a jest, as also the fact that they are warned!

Cross references

6:34 “Rejected were the messengers before thee: with patience and constancy they bore their rejection and their wrongs, until Our aid did reach them……”

All messengers gave good news as well as warnings so that humans would have no excuse for their ignorance of Allah’s laws.  However people used feeble excuses to reject the message but the messengers remained resolute.   We ought to learn from this and remain firm to Allah’s message.

6:114 Say: “Shall I seek for judge other than Allah? – when He it is Who hath sent unto you the Book, explained in detail.” …

Sura 18 (Al Kahf)

The Quran is a complete and fully detailed Book.

18:54 We have explained in detail in this Qur´an, for the benefit of mankind, every kind of similitude: but man is, in most things, contentious.

Cross References
17:41 We have explained (things) in various (ways) in this Qur´an, in order that they may receive admonition, but it only increases their flight (from the Truth)!

The Quran is a very clear and detailed book.  It has been sent as a mercy, healing and for the guidance of humanity and in that respect it is fully comprehensive and detailed.
It is a common source for Muslims and when we ignore it’s message disunity and turmoil sets in.   That  is precisely why the Muslim world is in such turmoil. We  do not have faith in The Final Revelation as a book that is sufficient for our guidance. May Allah strengthen our faith in the Qur’an.

Sura 18 (Al Kahf)

Satan has no authority over you except to call you.

18:50 Behold! We said to the angels, “Bow down to Adam”: They bowed down except Iblis. He was one of the Jinns, and he broke the Command of his Lord. Will ye then take him and his progeny as protectors rather than Me? And they are enemies to you! Evil would be the exchange for the wrong-doers!

18:51 I called them not to witness the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor (even) their own creation: nor is it for helpers such as Me to take as lead (men) astray!

A cross reference:

14:22 And Satan will say when the matter is decided: “It was Allah Who gave you a promise of Truth: I too promised, but I failed in my promise to you. I had no authority over you except to call you but ye listened to me: then reproach not me, but reproach your own souls. I cannot listen to your cries, nor can ye listen to mine. I reject your former act in associating me with Allah. For wrong-doers there must be a grievous penalty.”

Humans have a choice in life – either follow the straight path as laid out in the Quran or take the route of Iblis and his progeny -anyone who follows and supports the cause of evil can be labeled as satan. Satan has absolutely no authority over anyone. Our fate is in our own hands. We have the power to reject his alluring calls. Allah also forewarns us that Satan will eventually confess to his hypocritical personality. So let us beware and always try to live our lives according to the principles laid down in the Quran to avoid falling for satans deceptive calls.

The Day of Divine Justice

Verse 47  “One Day We shall remove the mountains, and thou wilt see the earth as a level stretch, and We shall gather them, all together, nor shall We leave out any one of them.”

Verse 49  “And the Book (of Deeds) will be placed (before you); and thou wilt see the sinful in great terror because of what is (recorded) therein; they will say, “Ah! woe to us! what a Book is this! It leaves out nothing small or great, but takes account thereof!” They will find all that they did, placed before them: And not one will thy Lord treat with injustice.”

cross references

99:7 Then shall anyone who has done an atom´s weight of good, see it!

99:8 And anyone who has done an atom´s weight of evil, shall see it.

Belief in the Day of Accountability is a fundamental aspect of Islam. The above verses should make us aware of the fact that all of our actions are being recorded and scrutinized constantly and that we will have to face the consequences if we transgress the Laws contained in the Quran .We should make every effort to do  deeds that are Just and Righteous and lead a balanced life according to Quranic principles . . .

3:114 They believe in Allah and the Last Day; they enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong; and they hasten (in emulation) in (all) good works: They are in the ranks of the righteous.

Sura 18 (AL Kahf)

Pride and arrogance can lead one towards committing shirk

Verse 32  Set forth to them the parable of two men: for one of them We provided two gardens of grape-vines and surrounded them with date palms; in between the two We placed corn-fields.

Verse 34 (Abundant) was the produce this man had : he said to his companion, in the course of a mutual argument: “more wealth have I than you, and more honour and power in (my following of) men.”

Verse 35 He went into his garden in a state (of mind) unjust to his soul: He said, “I deem not that this will ever perish,

Verse 42 So his fruits (and enjoyment) were encompassed (with ruin), and he remained twisting and turning his hands over what he had spent on his property, which had (now) tumbled to pieces to its very foundations, and he could only say, “Woe is me! Would I had never ascribed partners to my Lord and Cherisher!”

When Allah SWT bestows his blessings upon us we should be mindful of the responsibilities that come with those blessings – to use it in a way that is beneficial to humanity and not to become puffed up with pride and arrogance.

Sura 18 (Al Kahf)

Allah SWT only guides those who seek His Guidance

Verse 29 Say, “The truth is from your Lord”: Let him who will believe, and let him who will, reject (it): for the wrong-doers We have prepared a Fire…….

A few cross references
2:26 …..but He causes not to stray, except those who forsake (the path),-
17:13 Every man´s fate We have fastened on his own neck: On the Day of Judgment We shall bring out for him a scroll, which he will see spread open
42:13 …..Allah chooses to Himself those whom He pleases, and guides to Himself those who turn (to Him).
42:30 Whatever misfortune happens to you, is because of the things your hands have wrought, and for many (of them) He grants forgiveness.

Muslims have to take responsibility for their own situation and realize that if they want to improve it than they have to follow the guidance of the Quran .
5:16 Wherewith Allah guideth all who seek His good pleasure to ways of peace and safety, and leadeth them out of darkness, by His will, unto the light,- guideth them to a path that is straight.
