Surah Maryam (19) 21/10/2015

With the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Surah 19 (Maryam)

Verse 92
For it is not consonant with the majesty of (Allah) Most Gracious that He should beget a son.

Throughout this Surah, the Attribute of Allah, Ar-Rahmaan, has been used 17 times, no other Name or Attribute has been used to describe Allah SWT.The verse in reference and the overall context of the Surah deals with Isa AS and the erroneous beliefs that people have attributed to him.
The repeated mention of the Attribute meaning the Most Merciful, Most Compassionate, tells us that no saviour is needed for mankind as Allah will forgive us if we turn to Him. We can all be our own saviours if we repent and turn to Allah and don’t need anyone to atone for our misdeeds.

Further reference is Surah 39 verse 52

Say: “O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah. for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Surah 19 (Maryam)

Verse 76

“And Allah doth advance in guidance those who seek guidance…”

This verse provides us with some insight as to how the Will of Allah works.
Guidance and straying, who will be the people of Paradise or who will enter
the fire is not arbitrarily chosen by Allah,  but it is based on merit.  It is the responsibility of everyone, and a component of the free will that has been granted to mankind, to decide on our fate.

Surah 19 (Maryam)

Verse 59

But there came after them an evil generation, who wasted prayers and followed lusts, so they will meet perdition

After the passing of the messengers of Allah, the generations that followed them lost the essence of the message. Their salaah became meaningless. A warning for us in this verse as our salaah today has also become just an empty ritual. Among the many purposes of Salaah, it is meant to keep us away from committing evil and injustices.

Surah 19 (Maryam)

Ibrahim AS confronts his father
(verses 41 to 50)

Verses 41 to 43

(Also mention in the Book (the story of) Abraham: He was a man of Truth, a prophet. Behold, he said to his father: “O my father! why worship that which hears not and sees not, and can profit thee nothing? “O my father! to me hath come knowledge which hath not reached thee: so follow me: I will guide thee to a way that is even and straight.

Some lessons from the narration
– In ‘forbidding of wrong’, you should begin from your own kin.
– There is no age limitation for forbidding of wrong. (A young person can forbid the elderly members of the family from doing evils, but he must observe their respect and protect it.)
– Perfection of persons does not always relate to their age. Sometimes it happens that the child of a family understand the facts better than the elders of that family.
-The path of truth should not be sacrificed for affections.

Relationship ought not to hinder the act of forbidding of wrong.

Surah 19 (Maryam)

The speech of Isa AS

Verses 30 to 33

He (Isa) said: “I am indeed a servant of Allah. He hath given me revelation and made me a Prophet; “And He hath made me blessed where so ever I be, and hath enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live; “(He) hath made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable; “So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)”!

Isa AS  was a sincere servant and Prophet of Allah,  his personality was strengthened by his commitment to prayer,  charity and kindness to his mother.  Like Isa AS we should also keep up prayer, be charitable and be kind to our parents.  A great lesson especially for our youth.

Surah 19 (Maryam)

Striving to earn one’s sustenance

Verses 24-25 But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm-tree): “Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee;  “And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: It will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee.

With all the miracles surrounding the stories in this Surah, Allah SWT is reminding us in verse 25 that we need to put in the necessary effort for us to see results.

The Dua of Zakariya AS

Verse 4-6: Praying: “O my Lord! Infirm indeed are my bones, and the hair of my head does glisten with grey: but never am I unblest, O my Lord, in my prayer to Thee! “Now I fear (what) my relatives (and colleagues) (will do) after me: but my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Thyself,- “(One that) will (truly) represent me, and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!”

Most parents are concerned about the feeding, clothing and education of their children and seeing them grow up to be successful. We learn from this dua of Zakariya AS that even more important than that is seeing our children grow up to be models of righteousness and torch bearers of Islam.

Further reference is Surah 25 verse 74

And those who pray, “Our Lord! Grant unto us wives and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and give us (the grace) to lead the righteous.”
