Surah Hajj (22) 24/11/2015

Sura 22 (Hajj)

We are Muslims – nothing more – nothing less!

Verse 78: “And strive in His cause as ye ought to strive, (with sincerity and under discipline). He has chosen you, and has imposed no difficulties on you in religion; it is the way of your father Abraham. It is He (Allah) Who has named you Muslims, both before and in this (Revelation); that the Messenger may be a witness for you, and ye be witnesses for mankind! So establish regular Prayer, give regular Charity, and hold fast to Allah! He is your Protector – the Best to protect and the Best to help!”

In this verse we are plainly told that Allah (SWT) has imposed no difficulties for us in our faith, in other words Islam is a natural way of life.  Difficulties arise with self-imposed rules created by humans that violate Allah (SWT)’s basic and clear instructions.  The second source of difficulty is when society or individuals break Allah’s commandments which bring with it many social ills, for example, alcohol consumption may appear attractive to some but in reality it’s consumption brings with it countless ill effects.  Another very important lesson from this verse is Allah naming us “Muslims” and nothing else. This was established by Allah (SWT) from long before and adding other titles or variations to this unifying reference point of “Muslim” goes against the teaching of Allah (SWT).  Let us remain united as Muslims and nothing else.

That concludes Sura Hajj.  Tomorrow we commence with Sura muminoon inshallah….

Sura 22 (Hajj) (Monday)

Feeble is false worship

Verse 73-74: O men! Here is a parable set forth! listen to it! Those on whom, besides Allah, ye call, cannot create (even) a fly, if they all met together for the purpose! and if the fly should snatch away anything from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. Feeble are those who petition and those whom they petition! No just estimate have they made of Allah: for Allah is He Who is strong and able to carry out His Will.

Such a simple yet powerful example is provided. With all the greatness and development of the human race, we are still not able to produce an insignificant and often time irritating creature like a fly. This should be a humbling realization. It is such that we cannot even control such a creature but yet the Allah is the one that creates and controls all things and deserves our subservience.

The verse ends with a play on humour. Feeble is the petitioner and the petitioned – imagine a human with all the great capability and intellect subjects himself to the rules of an inanimate stone. Has not man weakened himself by such bondage whereas Allah (SWT) seeks to free us from being subservient to anything but Him – the All Great, Master of the Universe.

Refugees are promised a goodly provision

Verse 58: Those who leave their homes in the cause of Allah, and are then slain or die,- On them will Allah bestow verily a goodly Provision: Truly Allah is He Who bestows the best provision.

War is never an easy matter and leaving the security of one’s home and family is traumatic. Such expulsions often lead to fleeing without any hope of return. Such people though they may have lost much in this world have the good news of a better provision in the next. The justice of Allah (SWT) will always prevail. See also Sura 59 Verse 8.

Responsibilities of political leadership

Verse 41: (They are) those who, if We establish them in the land, establish regular prayer and give regular charity, enjoin the right and forbid wrong: with Allah rests the end (and decision) of (all) affairs.

The opportunity of political power is a natural outcome for the righteous. We read in Sura 21 verse 105: “Before this We wrote in the Psalms, after the Message (given to Moses): My servants the righteous, shall inherit the earth”. However, when the tables turn and given the responsibility of leadership, 4 requirements are given: Establishment of Salah and a moral value system (Sura 29 Verse 45), Zakah and economic balance and lastly the code of justice where rules are implemented to ensure goodness prospers and wrongful actions are curtailed.

Sura 22 (Hajj)

Fighting and protection of human rights
Verse 39-40: To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged;- and verily, Allah is most powerful for their aid;- (They are) those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right,- (for no cause) except that they say, “Our Lord is Allah”. Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid his (cause);- for verily Allah is full of Strength, Exalted in Might, (able to enforce His Will).

The permission for fighting is given in these verses but is conditional on being wronged. Two things mentioned here worth noting are that the violation is when you are attacked not for personal reasons but because of your faith and secondly a violation of human rights by expelling people from their homes. This fully justifies permission to fight. The universality of the Quranic injunction extends the responsibility of providing safety and security not only to Muslim places of worship but to other religious centres (e.g Churches, Synogogues etc). Some commentators have extended the meaning of the Arabic terms to also include market places and support centres (e.g hospitals). The protections and responsibilities instructed by Allah (SWT) are of the highest standards if we would just follow its wisdom.

Sura 22 (Hajj)

The sacrifice is more than blood and meat

Verse 37: It is not their meat nor their blood, that reaches Allah: it is your piety that reaches Him: He has thus made them subject to you, that ye may glorify Allah for His Guidance to you and proclaim the good news to all who do right.

The sacrifice after the Hajj is a culmination of the great event however; even this last phase of the Hajj is not amiss in ritual. The real purpose is not the physical aspects that can be observed by the type of animal or the manner of slaughter but rather the inner dimension. The element that counts in the sight of Allah (SWT) is ones conscious appreciation of Allah (SWT) – Taqwa – without which is mere killing with bloodletting and consumption. Additionally as with the other Eid this celebration is not limited to mark the end of the Hajj (or the Fast) but also to glorify (and show appreciation) to Allah (SWT) for His Guidance.

Hajj a universal gathering

Verse 27:”And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men: they will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain highways;

This call to the annual Hajj originates from the instruction to Ibrahim (AS) and has gone on for generations. The call is a universal one to Mankind and is truly a mixing pot with a comprehensive example of diversity. From every nook and corner representation is found and is an ideal opportunity for Muslim dialogue and initiation of planned coordinated support for areas of need in the Ummah. We have unfortunately lost that dimension of the Hajj (see Sura 9 Verses 1-3)

Sura 22 (Hajj)

Kaaba – The House of Allah a central focus for Muslims

Verse 26: Behold! We gave the site, to Abraham, of the (Sacred) House, (saying): “Associate not anything (in worship) with Me; and sanctify My House for those who compass it round, or stand up, or bow, or prostrate themselves (therein in prayer).

Here Ibrahim (AS) is given the site for the construction of the Baitullah (House of Allah) and represents symbolically the house of unity solely in the service to Allah (SWT) and none else. The Hajj is an annual reminder of this principle.

In Sura Baqara (2) Verse 125 we read: “Remember We made the House a place
of assembly for men and a place of safety; and take ye the station of Abraham as a place of prayer; and We covenanted with Abraham and Isma’il, that they should sanctify My House for those who compass it round, or use it as a retreat, or bow, or prostrate themselves (therein in prayer).”
The Kaaba is thus a source of strength and security and can truly be realized if we make Allah (SWT) our source of focus and attain unity.

Guidance is from Allah (SWT) and He is the ultimate judge

Verse 16-17 “We have sent down the Quran as clear evidence, and surely God guides whom He will. Allah will judge between the believers, the Jews, the Sabaeans, the Christians, the Magians and the polytheists on the Day of Judgement. Surely God is witness to everything.”

The guidance of Allah SWT is to be found in the Quran,  Allah’s Book makes itself clear and through it Allah guides man to the right path provided they make the effort for the guidance.   Cross reference 19:76 “Allah guides those who seek His guidance”.   How we respond to Allah’s guidance rests with us but we must be certain that Allah will judge all on the Day of the Judgement as He is witness to everything.

Sura 22 (Hajj)

Verse 12 :They call on such deities, besides Allah, as can neither hurt nor profit them: that is straying far indeed (from the Way)!

Verse 13 :(Perhaps) they call on one whose hurt is nearer than his profit: evil, indeed, is the patron, and evil the companion (or help)!

Cross references

10:18 :They serve, besides Allah, things that hurt them not nor profit them, and they say: “These are our intercessors with Allah.” Say: “Do ye indeed inform Allah of something He knows not, in the heavens or on earth?- Glory to Him! and far is He above the partners they ascribe (to Him)!”

17:57: Those whom they call upon do desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord, – even those who are nearest: they hope for His Mercy and fear His Wrath: for the Wrath of thy Lord is something to take heed of.

The above verses are very clear – Allah SWT is accessible to each and everyone of us.We have this erroneous mentality that you need a contact to get closer to Allah SWT.

2:186 :When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them): I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me: Let them also, with a will, Listen to My call, and believe in Me: That they may walk in the right way.
