Surah 24 (Nur)

24:58 O ye who believe! let those whom your right hands possess, and the (children) among you who have not come of age ask your permission (before they come to your presence), on three occasions: before morning prayer; the while ye doff your clothes for the noonday heat; and after the late-night prayer: these are your three times of undress: outside those times it is not wrong for you or for them to move about attending to each other: Thus does Allah make clear the Signs to you: for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.

Here the Quran shifts focus from discussing the political dimension to social customs and mannerisms at home. These verses instill in us respect for authority and norms of decency at home thereby paving the way for submitting to Allah’s laws in society on a national and international level much more easier.

Surah 24 (Nur)

24:55 Allah has promised, to those among you who believe and work righteous deeds, that He will, of a surety, grant them in the land, inheritance (of power), as He granted it to those before them; that He will establish in authority their religion – the one which He has chosen for them; and that He will change (their state), after the fear in which they (lived), to one of security and peace: ´They will worship Me (alone) and not associate aught with Me. ´If any do reject Faith after this, they are rebellious and wicked.

A system of government that upholds the injunctions of the Quran  produces a morally upright and just society which can only materialise if we fulfil the requirements stated. However equally the responsibility of leading such a society rests on applying the teachings of the Quran.

5:44…..”therefore fear not men, but fear me, and sell not my signs for a miserable price. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) Unbelievers.

Surah 24 (Nur)

24:47 They say, “We believe in Allah and in the messenger, and we obey”: but even after that, some of them turn away: they are not (really) Believers.

24:49 But if the right is on their side, they come to him with all submission.

24:51 The answer of the Believers, when summoned to Allah and His Messenger, in order that He may judge between them, is no other than this: they say, “We hear and we obey”: it is such as these that will attain felicity.

The above verses draw a clear distinction between opportunistic and committed believers . We must take heed and avoid developing such traits which ultimately lead to our ruin.In 2:9 “Fain would they deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and realise (it) not!”

Surah 24 (Nur)

24:41 Seest thou not that it is Allah Whose praises all beings in the heavens and on earth do celebrate, and the birds (of the air) with wings outspread? Each one knows its own (mode of) prayer and praise. And Allah knows well all that they do.

24:42 Yea, to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; and to Allah is the final goal (of all).

24:44 It is Allah Who alternates the Night and the Day: verily in these things is an instructive example for those who have vision!

All of Allah’s creation acknowledges HIS power and sovereignty and hence submits to His authority. We witness the harmony and equilibrium in nature and yet we fail to realize that if we submit to His laws than we too would achieve that balance in our lives.

The Quran encourages us to study the natural sciences to witness first hand the infinite creative capabilities of Allah SWT – this will increase our commitment and belief in His Revelation.

Surah 24 (Nur)
24:39 .But the Unbelievers,- their deeds are like a mirage in sandy deserts, which the man parched with thirst mistakes for water; until when he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing: But he finds Allah (ever) with him, and Allah will pay him his account: and Allah is swift in taking account.

14:18 “The parable of those who reject their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a tempestuous day: No power have they over aught that they have earned: that is the straying far, far (from the goal).”

The Qur’an defines a believer in sura 21:94 “ Whoever works any act of righteousness and has faith,- his endeavour will not be rejected: We shall record it in his favour.”

Therefore the correct belief(Eimaan) and righteous actions are inseparable parts of being a Muslim.

Surah 24 (Nur)

Verse 36 and 37 “(Lit is such a Light) in houses, which Allah hath permitted to be raised to honour; for the celebration, in them, of His name: In them is He glorified in the mornings and in the evenings, (again and again),-
By men whom neither traffic nor merchandise can divert from the Remembrance of Allah, nor from regular Prayer, nor from the practice of regular Charity: Their (only) fear is for the Day when hearts and eyes will be transformed (in a world wholly new),-”

This light of Allah”s wahi illuminates the homes of the believers where the laws and directives of Allah are constantly being studied for the express purpose of being implemented to create a benevolent society that is just and righteous.

In Verse 37 we see the commitment and dedication of the believers – to be successful they remain constant in striving to establish and maintain this justly  balanced society and do not allow themselves to be distracted by commercial and financial matters .They are people filled with awesome consciousness of the Day of Accountability.

Surah 24 (The Light)

The Quran guides from darkness towards  light

Verse 35 :”Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things.”

This is a beautifull parable that compares  Allah’s Revelation to Light – towards which He guides everyone who seeks His guidance.

By ignoring this light (WAHI) we can see  the dreadful consequences in almost all parts of the Muslim world today 2:257…..Of those who reject faith the patrons are the evil ones: from light they will lead them forth into the depths of darkness. They will be companions of the fire, to dwell therein (For ever).

Surah 24 (The Light)

Preventative measures for the preservation of chastity

The Quran requires both males and females to keep guard of their chastity and does so in the broadest possible terms encouraging a morally upright society.

Verse 30 “Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do”

Verse 30 addresses the males and verse 31 addresses the females requiring them to be modest in their interaction with each other ensuring the preservation of their chastity.  Both these verses are almost identical except that where it pertains to women (Verse 31) an emphasis is made on the dress code, requiring them to dress modestly and not in a revealing or enticing way.    The overarching message is one of modesty and preservation of chastity for both sexes.

Surah 24 (The Light)

The etiquette of visiting and respecting people’s privacy

In creating a harmonious and orderly society Allah SWT focuses on finer issues, which may be often overlooked.

Verse 27-28 “O you who believe! enter not houses other than your own, until you have asked permission and saluted those in them: that is best for you, in order that you may heed (what is seemly).  If you find no one in the house, enter not until permission is given to you: if ye are asked to go back, go back: that makes for greater purity for yourselves: and Allah knows well all that ye do”

In this case Allah SWT informs us of the akhlaaq of visiting and respecting people’s privacy.    We are not to enter other people’s homes unless we seek consent and honour them with a greeting of peace.   If people are unavailable to receive us we should respect their time and privacy and return at a time convenient to the host.  It is often these seemingly little issues that creates much uneasiness in society, family or friendship relations and the Quran by counselling us in this regard seeks to create better social cohesion.

Keep to your plighted word

Verse 23: “Let not those among you who are endued with grace and amplitude of means resolve by oath against helping their kinsmen, those in want, and those who have left their homes in Allah’s cause: let them forgive and overlook, do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful”

At times we may be caused some harm by people which angers us.  We may express our anger by withholding something that is due to the person (be it monetary or otherwise) who caused us the harm.  The Quran counsels the Believers to perform on their obligations despite the harm that the other party may have inflicted upon us.  In doing so Allah SWT truly builds our character, which in the long term will bring the perpetrator to a realisation and appreciation for Quranic values.

Cross reference 41:34 “ Nor can Goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (Evil) with what is better: then will he between whom and you was hatred become as it were your friend and intimate”
