Sura 30

Verse 41 Mischief has appeared on land and sea because of (the meed) that the hands of men have earned, that (Allah) may give them a taste of some of their deeds: in order that they may turn back (from Evil).

7:56 Do no mischief on the earth, after it hath been set in order, but call on Him with fear and longing (in your hearts): for the Mercy of Allah is (always) near to those who do good.

Allah SWT’s Mercy and Compassion has no bounds. We are given ample opportunity to repent and amend our conduct. This attribute of Allah’s grace should be enough to convince the most ardent disbelievers – yet we fail to grasp this opportunity.16:61 If Allah were to punish men for their wrong-doing, He would not leave, on the (earth), a single living creature: but He gives them respite for a stated Term:……

7:153 But those who do wrong but repent thereafter and (truly) believe,- verily thy Lord is thereafter Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Sura 30 (Rum -The Romans)

Signs in nature

Verse 24 “And among His Signs, He shows you the lightning, by way both of fear and of hope, and He sends down rain from the sky and with it gives life to the earth after it is dead: verily in that are Signs for those who are wise”

In this verse Allah SWT appeals to our sense of intellect (aql), He reminds us of the power of lightning which brings with it the hope of life through the rain which nourishes the earth and makes life possible.  On the other hand it also brings with it the possibility of destruction.   Allah’s revelation should be seen in a similar light – human beings without guidance are like the living dead and with Allah’s guidance comes the hope of life on the one hand and on the other hand the possibility of destruction.  If we heed Allah’s commandments our lives become successful, benefitting not only ourselves but those around us as well.  Likewise, if violate His commandments then our destruction is certain.

Sura 30 (Rum – The Romans)

Signs of Allah: unity and diversity

Verse 21: And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect

Verse 22: And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colours: verily in that are Signs for those who know.

A section of Sura Rum has a series of repetitive verses beginning with “Among His signs…” . In the selection provided above the blessing and purpose of marriage is highlighted. This union is a natural process and source of peaceful coexistence and comfort. This comes through love and mercy which is “put” by Allah but … cannot truly materialise if we fail to be conscious of Him.

The second is a highlight of humanities greatness through diversity. The multitude of races and cultures provides an opportunity to learn from one another. We just need to think of the paper we use, the coffee bean, the telephone – all these have come from different nations and cultures. See also Sura 49 verse 13.

In sum these opportunities of coexistence are filled with Allah SWT’s blessings if we are ready to reflect and observe the divine signature (signs).

Sura 30

Allah SWT has control over life and death of everything in the entire universe

Verse 19 It is He who brings out the  living from the dead, and the dead from the living,  and who gives life to the earth after it is dead: and thus shall you be brought out ( from the dead).

Allah SWT draws our attention to the fact that He  controls the life and death of everything in the universe. He controls the life cycles on earth where He can create living things from inorganic matter, and he can make living things die and decompose to its constituent elements.  Similarly,  just as rain brings life on a dead earth,  on the day of judgement , He will resurrect us to face our Judgment.

Lessons from past civilizations

Verse 9
Have they not travelled through the land and seen how their predecessors met their end? They were mightier than them: they cultivated the earth more and built more upon it. Their own messengers also came to them with clear signs: God did not wrong them; they wronged themselves.

In Surah Ankaboot (29) we came across a verse encouraging us to travel in order to understand our origins. In this verse, we are encouraged to travel in order to learn from past civilisations. In the 21st century, we may marvel at the technological advancements we have made. But we don’t realise how powerful past nations were. The carving out of dwellings in Petra and the pyramids are there as reminders of the might that previous generations had, but all that power is useless when we disobey Allah. Lessons for us to always keep in mind.

Cross reference  Surah 21 verse 11 –
“For, how many a community that persisted in evildoing have We dashed into fragments, and raised another people in its stead!”

Sura 30 (Rum – the Romans)

Victory … is a matter of time

Verses 2-5 “The Roman Empire has been defeated,  in a land close by; but they, (even) after (this) defeat of theirs, will soon be victorious, within a few years.   … on that Day shall the Believers rejoice with the help of Allah. He helps whom He will, and He is exalted in might, most merciful”

The Believers were under tremendous pressure at the hands of the Polytheists.  When the Roman empire, being People of Scripture were defeated by the Persians, it dealt another blow to Religion in general.
These verses reassure the Believers that despite this setback, both the Romans and the Muslims will gain victory shortly.  This prophecy was indeed fulfilled in a few years following revelation of the verse.

What we learn from here is that Truth will eventually vanquish falsehood,
all that is required is that believers remain resilient.
