Sura Fussilat (41)

When trouble touches man

41:49. man does not weary of asking for good (things), but if ill touches him, He gives up all hope (and) is lost In despair.
41:50. when We give Him a taste of some Mercy from Ourselves, after some adversity has touched him, He is sure to say, “This is due to my (merit): I think not that the Hour (of judgment) will (ever) be established; but if I am brought back to My Lord, I have (much) good (stored) In His sight!” but we will Show the unbelievers the truth of all that They did, and we shall give them the taste of a severe penalty.
This is typical of one who is ungrateful to God. When he experiences challenges in life, he becomes full of despair instead of persevering and maintaining his trust in Allah(2:153). When he becomes successful, he becomes arrogant and attributes his success to himself, forgetting that all success is from Allah. Such people prefer indulging in the life of this world without any moral constraints, hence they doubt the reality of the Akhirah. Let us bear in mind not to loose hope in Allah’s mercy or to become arrogant when bestowed with material success.

Beautiful preaching

41:33. who is better In speech than one who calls (men) to Allah, works righteousness, and says, “I am of those who bow In Islam”?
41:34. nor can goodness and evil be equal. repel (evil) with what is better: then will He between whom and Thee was hatred become As it were Thy friend and intimate!
41:35. and no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint,- none but persons of the greatest good fortune.
41:36. and if (at any time) an incitement to discord is made to Thee by the evil one, seek refuge In Allah. He is the one who hears and knows all things.

Advice is given to the believers to repel hostility and harshness with kindness and gentlness. The one who will overlook the faults of others even when one knows that they are in the wrong, is the one gifted with Sabr (enduarance). This is excellent advice especially when involved in preaching Allah’s message and being faced with hostility.

Cross reference
16:125. invite (all) to the way of Thy Lord with wisdom and preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His path, and who receive guidance.

The reward of the righteous

41:30. In the case of those who say, “Our Lord is Allah., And, further, stand straight and steadfast, the angels descend on them (from time to time): “Fear ye not!” (They suggest), “Nor grieve! but receive the glad tidings of the Garden (of bliss), the which ye were promised!

41:31. “We are your protectors In This life and In the Hereafter: therein shall ye have all that your souls shall desire; therein shall ye have all that ye ask for!-

41:32. “A hospitable gift from one Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful!”

These verses show that it is in this life that the angels descend upon the faithful, giving them the joyful news that they should not have any fear. In fact, it is here, when the faithful are persecuted and oppressed, and when the powers of evil seem to have the upper hand, that such assurances are most needed, and it is here that the angels give them comfort and strength to bear hardships, and thus they ultimately overcome the forces of evil.

Cross reference

8:12. Remember Thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): “I am with you: give Firmness to the believers: I will instill terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them.”

Surah Fussilat (41)

You cannot hide from your sins

41:19. on the Day that the enemies of Allah will be gathered together to the fire, they will be marched In ranks.
41:20. at length, when they reach the (fire), their hearing, their sight, and their skins will bear witness against them, As to (all) their deeds.
41:21. They will say to their skins: “Why bear ye witness against us?” They will say: “(Allah) hath given us speech,- (He) who giveth speech to everything: He created you for the first time, and unto Him were ye to return.
41:22. “Ye did not seek to hide yourselves, lest your hearing, your sight, and your skins should bear witness against you! but ye did think that Allah knew not many of the things that ye used to do!
41:23. “But This thought of yours which ye did entertain concerning your Lord, hath brought you to destruction, and (now) have ye become of those utterly lost!”

The punishment of the rejecters is vividly described in these set of verses. The speech of the skin and limbs indicate the fact that man cannot escape the consequences his misdeeds. Our own bodies will provide evidence against us and for wrongdoers there is no means of escape.

Cross reference
36:65. that Day shall we set a seal on their mouths. but their hands will speak to us, and their feet bear witness, to all that They did.

The attitude of those who oppose revelation
41:5. They say: “Our hearts are under veils, (concealed) from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is a deafness, and between us and you is a screen: so do what you will; for us, we shall do (what we will!)”
The coverings of the hearts, the deafness of the ears and the hanging of the veils are used simply to indicate their own determined rejection of the Truth. They resolved neither to open their hearts, lest the Truth should enter them, nor to lend their ears so that they might even hear the preaching of the Prophet. In fact, it was their own act which brought about that consequence. May Allah protect us from being biased against the Truth.
Cross reference
17:46. and we put coverings over their hearts (and minds) lest they should understand the Qur’an, and deafness into their ears: when thou dost commemorate thy Lord and Him alone In the Qur’an, they turn on their backs, fleeing (from the truth).

Sura Fussilat (41)

The creation of the earth in six periods

Verses 9-12 provide a further explanation of the six periods mention in Sura 7 Verse 54:

Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of authority): He draws the night as a veil over the Day, Each seeking the other In rapid succession: He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds!

Verse 9-12: Say: is it that ye deny Him who created the earth in two Days? and do ye join equals with Him? He is the Lord of (all) the worlds. He set on the (earth), mountains standing firm, high above it, and bestowed blessings on the earth, and measure therein all things to give them nourishment in due proportion, in four days, in accordance with (the needs of) those who seek (Sustenance). Moreover He comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: “Come ye together, willingly or unwillingly.” They said: “We do come (together), In willing obedience.” so He completed them as seven firmaments in two days, and He assigned to each heaven its duty and command. And We adorned the lower heaven with lights, and (provided it) with guard. such is the Decree of (Him) the Exalted In Might, full of knowledge.

Although there appears to be a contradiction, the 4 periods mentioned in verse 10 include the 2 overlapping periods mentioned in verse 9, thereby giving us the total of 6 periods. To read more on how these periods correspond with Einstein’s concept of time dilation read here:

The Quran has all the answers necessary for guidance

41:1. Ha Mim:

41:2. a Revelation from ((Allah)), Most Gracious, Most Merciful;-

41:3. a Book, whereof the verses are explained In detail;- a Qur’an In Arabic, for people who understand;-

The term Fussilat means Fully Explained. Allah describes the Quran as a fully detailed Book. This indicates that all the necessary requirements and guidelines for guidance are found in the Quran. It leaves out nothing that is essential for the guidance of humankind.
Cross – reference
39:27. we have put forth for men, In This Qur’an every kind of parable, In order that They may receive admonition.
