Sura 43 (Zukhruf – Golden adornments)

The hypocrisy of the rejecters

Verses 87-89 “If thou ask them, who created them, they will certainly say, Allah: How then are they deluded away (from the Truth)? (Allah has knowledge) of the (Prophet’s) cry, “O my Lord! Truly these are people who will not believe!” But turn away from them, and say “Peace!” But soon shall they know!”

The Surah concludes by exposing the hypocrisy of the rejecters. They acknowledge that a Higher Power has created the heavens and the earth and they enjoy the benefits arising out of all He has created but refuse to accept His scripture as guidance. Their reaction caused concern to the Prophet SAW but Allah SWT counsels the Prophet to wish upon them peace (as he was inspired to do with the ignorant who were pestering him (25:63)). By wishing upon them peace Allah assures them of their freedom of choice and informs us of the non confrontational method of da’wah. Allah further informs them that the consequences of their actions will soon become evident. Let us learn that in our zeal to spread Islam we will be confronted with similar attitudes and our reaction must be in accordance with the above guidelines being non confrontational and wishing peace even upon the detractors.

And that concludes Sura Zukhruf. Tomorrow we commence Sura Dukhan Insha Allah

Sura 43 (Zukhruf – Golden adornments)

Jesus PBUH – a faithful servant of Allah

The status of Eesa (AS) had always attracted great attention. The Jews felt he was an impostor whilst the Christians went to the other extreme and worshipped him as God almighty or a son of God. The Quran sets the record straight.

Verses “When Jesus came with Clear Signs, he said: “Now have I come to you with Wisdom, and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) on which ye dispute: therefore fear Allah and obey me. For Allah, He is my Lord and your Lord: so worship ye Him: this is a Straight Way. But sects from among themselves fell into disagreement: then woe to the wrong-doers, from the Penalty of a Grievous Day”.

From the above verses we see that Eesa (AS) was a Prophet of Allah SWT and taught the same message as other prophets, he never claimed he was God but instead directed the people to worship God. However, later generations invented things in his name and inserted into their religion the concept of trinity. As Muslims we have to be on guard not to fall into the same trap by inventing things in the name of Allah and His messenger.

Sura 43 (Zukhruf – Golden adornments)

Holding fast to the Quran

Verses 41-44 “Even if We take you away, We shall be sure to exact retribution from them, or We shall show you that which We have promised them: for verily We shall prevail over them. So hold thou fast to the Revelation sent down to you; verily thou art on a Straight Way. The (Qur’an) is indeed the message, for you and for your people; and soon shall ye (all) be brought to account”

Allah reminds the Prophet SAW that whether He punishes the Quraysh with destruction or shows him victory over them, in the end either way Allah’s way must prevail. Hence the Prophet SAW and the believers are reminded not to be focussed on the outcome but to rather hold firmly to the Quran, preach its message and perform their tasks according to its directives. The outcome will be determined by Allah SWT depending on the reaction of the people.

Sura 43 (Zukhruf – Golden adornments)

Verse 32-33 “Also, they say: “Why is not this Qur’an sent down to some leading man in either of the two (chief) cities?” Is it they who would portion out the Mercy of thy Lord? It is We Who portion out between them their livelihood in the life of this world: ….”

We see here the attitude displayed by those blessed with material prowess and stature. The kufr standard was based on materialism and mutual regard but Allah’s standard was based on moral excellence. The rejecters could not accept, due to their pride and arrogance, that someone whom they didn’t consider amongst their own rank could be chosen for Prophethood. Hence Allah SWT reminds them in the next verse that material excellence comes from Him. A similar response is given to Musa (AS) by Pharoah in verses 51-53. This teaches us that material excellence or social status should not hinder us from the Truth nor should it be a standard to determine righteousness but instead it should serve to bring us closer to Allah SWT.

Blind following

Verses 20-22 “(“Ah!”) they say, “If it had been the will of (Allah) Most Gracious, we should not have worshipped such (deities)!” Of that they have no knowledge! they do nothing but lie! What! have We given them a Book before this, to which they are holding fast?.”

In verses 20 – 22 we see the ill effects of blind following. The rejecters were comfortable with the status quo and were not prepared to change as this would compromise their vested interests. As a result they reasoned that Allah would not have allowed them to commit shirk if this wasn’t acceptable to Him. In essence they are saying that Allah has approved their polytheistic practices. Allah’s answer to them is that these practices are not approved in Scripture and exposes the fact that they are simply blindly following the practices of their forefathers. We should be mindful not to fall into a similar trap by ensuring that we always check our practices against Allah’s clear instructions in the Quran.

Sura 43 (Zukhruf – Golden adornments)

Being grateful to Allah for His favours

In verses 9 – 13 Allah SWT reminds us of His countless favours. He reminds us of how spacious He had made the earth and placed therein roads in order for us to live and travel therein, how the rain nourishes the earth through which we sustain ourselves and the various modes of transport. In verse 13 a beautiful dua is given to us, which we ought to reflect upon.

Verse 13 “….and when you are so seated, you may celebrate the (kind) favour of your Lord, and say, “Glory to Him Who has subjected these to our (use), for we could never have accomplished this (by ourselves)”.

This is the translation of the dua commonly read for travel. Upon closer reflection the “Glory” we utter should be one of awe of Allah SWT for having made all of the these natural resources subject to our use. Without these it would be beyond the capability of mankind to reach such achievements.

Surah Zukhruf (43) 22/05/2016

Sura 43 (Zukhruf – Golden adornments)

This Sura obtains its title from Verse 35 where the word zukhruf or golden adornments is mentioned. The Sura informs us of the dangers of materialism and people infatuated therewith offer the greatest resistance to Allah’s message.

Verses 1-3 “Ha – Meem. By the Book that makes things clear, We have made it a Qur’an in Arabic, that ye may be able to understand (and learn wisdom)”

The Sura opens its case by informing us of an important characteristic of the Quran, that is – it makes things clear. Amongst all of the confusion that was prevalent during the time of our Prophet the Quran came to set the record straight and liberate those who subscribed to it. In verse 3 we are told that Allah revealed it in the language of its recipients which is Arabic so that people could ponder upon its message. By pondering and reflecting on the message people were able to grasp it and transform their lives accordingly and by doing so they became a successful generation of world leaders. Muslims today are in dire need of this and our only solution is to go back to the Quran, reflect upon it and live it.
