Surah 48 (Fath)

Tranquility of the heart strengthens faith

Verse 4: It is He Who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the Believers, that they may add faith to their faith;- for to Allah belong the Forces of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Full of Knowledge and Wisdom.

The situation for the Muslims was very tough prior to the treaty of Hudaibiya. There was anxiety and tension in the Muslim camp with anger and the desire to fight the aggressing Meccans. However, the situation required calm and thoughtful response. It is in this situation that Allah (SWT) had sent upon the hearts of the believer’s tranquility (sakinah). This change in attitude to the decision taken strengthened the zeal and conviction of the believers and eventually led to the ultimate victory. This is in stark contrast to the aggressors who had vengeance in their hearts and minds (see verse 26) and finally led to their loss. The need to adopt an attitude of calm acceptance and conviction in the decisions of Allah (SWT) is an important lesson.

Surah Mumin (40) 01/05/2016

With the name of Allah Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Sura 40 (Mumin)

This Sura derives its name from verses 28-45 and deals with the individual’s witness to faith and virtue and his triumph in the end.  In essence it gives solace to the Muslims who were being persecuted, it warns the persecutors and foretells the triumph of truth and the failure of opposition to the truth.

Verse 1-2
“Ha Meem, The revelation of this Book is from Allah, exalted in power, full of knowledge.”

The revelation is associated with two interesting attributes of Allah SWT.  The first being Al- Azeez which signifies Allah’s authority/power and the second Al Aleem which signifies Allah’s infinite knowledge.   In other words the Quran reflects Allah’s authority and its contents are based on complete knowledge.   No addition or reduction to Allah’s words is necessary simply because He is Al-Aleem, the one with complete knowledge.

Surah 24 (Nur)
24:39 .But the Unbelievers,- their deeds are like a mirage in sandy deserts, which the man parched with thirst mistakes for water; until when he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing: But he finds Allah (ever) with him, and Allah will pay him his account: and Allah is swift in taking account.

Cross References
14:18 “The parable of those who reject their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a tempestuous day: No power have they over aught that they have earned: that is the straying far, far (from the goal).”

The Qur’an defines a believer in sura 21:94 “ Whoever works any act of righteousness and has faith,- his endeavour will not be rejected: We shall record it in his favour.”

Therefore the correct belief(Eimaan) and righteous actions are inseparable parts of being a Muslim.

Surah Hajj (22) 13/11/2015

Sura 22 (Hajj)

Faith and reason

Verse 5 “O mankind! if ye have a doubt about the Resurrection, (consider) that We created you out of dust, then out of sperm, then out of a leech-like clot, then out of a morsel of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed, in order that We may manifest (our power) to you; and We cause whom We will to rest in the wombs for an appointed term, then do We bring you out as babies, ……. and (further), you see the earth barren and lifeless, but when We pour down rain on it, it is stirred (to life), it swells, and it puts forth every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs)”

In this verse Allah (SWT) uses scientific evidence to make us realise the reality of the afterlife.   The Quran presents succinct reasoning in Verse 5 by asking the reader to apply his or her mind to the cycle of life from conception until old age.  It is nothing but the natural laws ordained by Allah (SWT) that causes life to spring forth from a process of fertilization, remain in the mother’s womb for nurturing and then come out as a fully formed human being. We witness this miracle daily as we do with the vegetation which is given life through rain, again through the natural laws ordained by Allah SWT.   If all this is possible for Him then resurrecting us for accountability is easy for Allah as well.   Thus through reasoning, our faith is strengthened.

Surah Nahl (16) 11/09/2015

Surah 16

Verse 97. Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has Faith, to Him will we ccgive a new life, a life that is good and pure and we will bestow on their reward according to the best of their actions.

The Quran has laid the foundation of fair treatment and equitaility between man and woman. There is no distinction in the rewards for either gender in service to the Creator – payscales are the same!
Furthermore, we all want the GOOD life, the formula is simple: Imaan + Amal (Faith + Righteous action) = Good life! But wait there is more reward not just on deeds but preferential selection of the best – what could be better!
