Characteristics of the Righteous
Verse 15 – 19: “As to the Righteous, they will be in the midst of Gardens and Springs. Taking joy in the things which their Lord gives them, because, before then, they lived a good life. They were in the habit of sleeping but little by night. And in the hours of early dawn, they (were found) praying for Forgiveness. And in their wealth and possessions (was remembered) the right of the (needy,) him who asked, and him who (for some reason) was prevented (from asking).”
The righteous are here promised Heaven and three characteristics are given. Firstly they lived a life of goodness meaning their character and actions were full of benefit to others. Secondly they were close to the Creator and conscious of their accountability even when others were physically or spiritually asleep. Thirdly they realised that their wealth came with a responsibility to ensure that the needs of the less fortunate were attended to.

Sura 47 (Muhammad)
The importance of spending in Allah’s cause
“Behold, you are those invited to spend (of your substance) in the way of Allah: But among you are some that are niggardly. But any who are niggardly are so at the expense of their own souls. But Allah is free of all wants, and it is ye that are needy. If ye turn back (from the Path), He will substitute in your stead another people; then they would not be like you”
In verses 36 and 37 Allah SWT informs us of the importance of charity but at the same time He does not expect us to give all of our wealth in charity. Allah SWT wants us to hold a balance and spend our wealth wisely for the uplfitment of society. If we are miserly, this will cause our own downfall, wealth will not circulate and social imbalance will bring about chaos and disharmony in society. If we fall into this trap of materialism and greed, Allah SWT warns us that other people who are more committed to Him will take over from us and serve His cause.
