Surah 48 (Fath)

Sacredness of life

Verse 25: They are the ones who denied Revelation and hindered you from the Sacred Mosque and the sacrificial animals, detained from reaching their place of sacrifice. Had there not been believing men and believing women whom ye did not know that ye were trampling down and on whose account a crime would have accrued to you without (your) knowledge, (Allah would have allowed you to force your way, but He held back your hands) that He may admit to His Mercy whom He will. If they had been apart, We should certainly have punished the Unbelievers among them with a grievous Punishment.

The verse describes the preceding event to the treaty of Hudaibiyah. The pilgrimage of the Prophet (SAW) and his followers was obstructed by the warring Meccans. The choice of undertaking an aggressive challenge to the Meccans was an option but was not selected and rather a peace treaty of Hudaibiyah was chosen which provided the ultimate long term victory. Of importance is Allah (SWT)s mention of a reason in protecting the sacredness of the life of fellow believers.

There were believers who may not have had the strength or conviction to openly come across to Medina and remained secretly in Mecca. Although some may argue that these were “weak” or “not genuine” believers but even their lives were of high regard and Allah (SWT) prevented the believers to fight which may have led to them inadvertently and unknowingly killing believers. This level of care is in stark contrast to the wanton killing of believers on either side of the divide in modern times and is unacceptable.
